Leon Luini and Yorick de Groot Win Silver at European Beach Volleyball Championship in Vienna

Beach volleyball players Leon Luini and Yorick de Groot grabbed the European title in Vienna on Sunday. They surprisingly reached the final, in which they had to recognize their superiority in Sweden’s David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig.

The 22-year-old Luini and the one year older De Groot went down 21-16 and 21-18 and therefore had to make do with silver. Gold had been the ultimate crown for a surprisingly strong tournament.

Earlier in the day, the Dutch couple had reached the final by beating Sergiy Popov and Eduard Reznik from Ukraine. That happened without losing a set: 22-20 and 21-18.

On Saturday, Luini and De Groot stunted by eliminating the Norwegian top players Anders Mol and Christian Sørum. That victory came in three sets (16-21, 21-14 and 15-12). Mol and Sørum are the reigning Olympic and World champions and have already become European champions four times.

Earlier this European Championship, Matthew Immers and Steven van de Velde were eliminated in the quarterfinals on behalf of the Netherlands. Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen failed earlier in the tournament.
