Leon Camier at the crossroads: Important appointment on Monday

Leon Camier had to do without the first races of the 2020 Superbike season in Australia due to pain in the injured shoulder. Before the two test days in Misano last week, he was aware that he was not in top shape, but after four months of relaxation, training, physiotherapy and massages, the 33-year-old was in good spirits to be able to move his Ducati V4R at decent speed.

Then came the disillusionment: Camier lost 3.7 seconds to his best colleague Scott Redding!

“I have no difficulties in normal life,” said the Englishman, who lives in Andorra. «Trial or Supermoto driving is no problem for me. But as soon as I sit on the superbike, I feel pain after a few laps. I suspect it has to do with the seating position on the motorcycle. »

“I will go back to my doctor, Doctor Fernando Santana, in Barcelona on Monday,” Camier told SPEEDWEEK.com. “We will do various tests to understand what’s going on. I suspect that I have a muscular imbalance and therefore pain. »

In just under five weeks, at the beginning of August, the Superbike World Championship will continue in Jerez. “I don’t know if it’s better by then,” the Ducati driver admitted. «I have no idea what’s going on. I hope that the problem can be solved quickly by, for example, repairing something quickly with a little intervention. If not, I have to make a decision soon. I was expecting to come back and be better. It is also much better than in Australia – but not at the level to realize my potential. My team is incredible, very understanding. That’s why I don’t want to put her in a bad position for Jerez. If I want to drive there, it’s because I can. Otherwise I don’t drive. It wouldn’t be fair to Barni or myself if I came to Jerez and couldn’t drive. I have to be honest with myself – I’m not ready to take another fall yet. The shoulder is not ready for that. »

Camier hopes that he will be diagnosed over the next few days and can then make a plan for the coming weeks. For the big superbike test in Barcelona on the 8th / 9th In July the team will have to find another driver. The obvious choice would be Ducati test driver Michele Pirro, who contests the Italian championship for Barni.

When the Superbike World Championship picks up speed again on the first weekend in August in southern Spain, four events in six weeks go by. Portimao is right on the weekend to Jerez. Then two weekends is nothing before there are two successive events in Aragon.
