Leo Sauer: Breaking Records at Feyenoord Rotterdam as the Youngest Slovak in Champions League History

BRATISLAVA. At first, he was afraid of how he would manage alone in the Netherlands. Without parents, without a brother. However, he quickly adapted. He often moves around Rotterdam by bicycle. He is still not an adult.

It’s still a baby on paper, but it’s already breaking records.

The value of the staff of the famous Feyenoord Rotterdam exceeds two hundred million euros. No Slovak footballer has scored a goal in such a big club – at such a young age.

Leo Sauer did it at seventeen, immediately in his first competitive match. At the end of August, within the Dutch league.

And on Tuesday night he took care of another record. He became the youngest Slovak in history to play in a Champions League group stage match.

His Feyenoord beat Celtic Glasgow 2:0 at home. Sauer entered the game in the 87th minute of the match.

Aged 17 years, nine months and three days. Until now, the youngest Slovak player was Szilárd Németh.

How the Slovak tricked the goalkeeper

In 1997, he made his debut in the Sparta Prague jersey against Dortmund at the age of 20 years, one month and 23 days.

Since Sauer only started at the end of the match, he didn’t get much done. He had four passes, all accurate.

This season, he played four competitive matches in the jersey of the Dutch champion, jumping into the game as a substitute in all cases.

In Feyenoord, he is greatly helped by his compatriot Dávid Hancko, who played the entire match on Tuesday against Celtic Glasgow.

It was also his debut in the group stage of the Champions League.

Hancko had up to 112 touches, the most of all players on the field. His pass success rate was up to 94 percent.

He reacted excellently with the first goal. The Slovak defender was standing in the wall, but skillfully avoided the shot of his teammate, who opened the scoring with a direct kick.

As if he was there by mistake

“He is my mentor, he speaks the same language and he helps me a lot,” his compatriot Sauer praised Hancka.

If you look at the squad of the Dutch champion through the lens of finances, then Sauer seems to be there by mistake. Why?
