It is the severance pay that is currently being auctioned, as Messi refers to a clause in the contract that he can leave for free before the last year of the contract.
The deadline for applying this clause expired on June 10, when the Spanish league season was officially over, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was not played until July. The Champions League then continued until August, and according to Messi’s lawyers, the footballer could only use the clause after the actual end of the season.
However, Barcelona insists that Messi remains its player, on the contrary, it offered him an extension of the contract until 2023. Potential applicants for the Argentine star must pay an exit clause of 700 million euros (18.5 billion crowns).
Messi has a contract for one more season. This year, however, he was disappointed with the results of Barcelona, which did not win any trophy for the first time since 2008.
