Lenovo, a leading technology company, has recently unveiled its updated ThinkPads and ThinkBooks, featuring improved processors and accessibility features. The announcement includes refreshed versions of several ThinkPad T-series laptops, as well as a few accessories.
The ThinkPad T14 Gen 5, ThinkPad T14s Gen 5, and ThinkPad T16 Gen 3 are the three refreshed ThinkPad T-series laptops. These laptops are equipped with Intel Core Ultra processors, with an option for an AMD Ryzen 8040 on the T14 Gen 5 model. One notable feature of these laptops is Lenovo’s communication bar, which extends a portion of the top bezel to house the camera and microphones. This design choice allows for slimmer top bezels and taller display ratios. The communication bar was previously introduced in other ThinkPad models like the X1 Carbon and X1 Nano.
In terms of keyboard improvements, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 now includes more homing bars, swapped Ctrl and Fn keys, and a new Copilot key between the right Alt and Ctrl keys. These changes aim to enhance accessibility and improve the typing experience. Lenovo has also made adjustments to the tactile markings on the T-series keyboards, adding homing bars to the Fn, Insert, Enter, and volume keys. This feature is similar to the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 and ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 9 laptops, making typing more accessible for visually impaired users. Additionally, Lenovo has swapped the traditional placement of the Fn and Ctrl keys, aligning them with industry standards. However, the Windows key remains in its original position.
Lenovo has also collaborated with iFixit to make hardware component replacements easier for users. The ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 and T16 Gen 3 now feature fully socketed DIMM slots instead of soldered RAM, user-replaceable cable-free batteries, and accessible SSD and wireless adapter slots. To assist users who are new to laptop repairs, Lenovo has included QR codes inside the laptop body near each repairable component. These QR codes provide instructional videos on the repair process. Additionally, indicators have been added to guide users on which screws to remove when replacing the keyboard and trackpad.
Another exciting addition to Lenovo’s lineup is the ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 2. This model features an Intel Core Ultra U processor, 32GB LPDDR5x soldered RAM, a 5MP front-facing webcam with Windows Hello support, an 8MP outward-facing camera, and compatibility with a 4G LTE wireless adapter. The first-gen model of the ThinkPad X12 Detachable received positive reviews upon its release in April 2021.
Lenovo has also made improvements to its ThinkBook 14 2-in-1 laptop. The key travel has been shortened to 1.5mm, and the touchpad has been enlarged for a better user experience. Additionally, Lenovo has introduced new peripherals and accessories, including the ThinkVision M14t Gen 2 Mobile touch monitor and a USB-C Slim travel dock.
Consumers can expect the Intel-configured ThinkPads to be available in stores from April 2024, with prices starting at $1,199. The AMD configuration of the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 will be available in May 2024, starting at $949. The ThinkBook and USB-C dock will be available from March 2024, with prices starting at $1,169 and $89.99, respectively. The portable monitor will arrive in July 2024, priced at $399.
