Lenovo is reportedly preparing to introduce a laptop with a completely transparent display. The idea is certainly interesting, but won’t it be an impractical distraction?
At the congress MWC 2024, which will take place at the end of this month, Lenovo is to introduce, among many other novelties, a laptop that will be equipped with a completely transparent OLED display. LG showed this technology a month ago at the trade fair CES and used it to make television.
According to leaked information, the laptop is supposed to be part of the ThinkBook series. From the photos, we can also notice the keyboard, which looks like a solid glass plate. This touch surface can logically be seen even if the notebook is closed and it will be visible how dirty the keyboard is.
The main challenge for transparent OLED displays is the absence of a substrate, which causes the faded nature of the colors. LG has solved this problem with its TV with a kind of foil that is hidden in the TV stand and if needed, it can be pulled out, creating a black background for the display.
From a design and technological point of view, this is more than an attractive matter, the question remains whether the transparent display will be so great even in everyday use. Just the idea of working on a laptop and seeing through it to an untidy table or straight out the window makes me very upset. Another eternal struggle will be hand and finger prints all over the surface.
