Mayor Lenferink updates the city council about corona.
Tonight, Mayor Henri Lenferink reported on the state of affairs regarding corona in Leiden at the first meeting of the Leiden council in museum Naturalis. The mayor did not join the meeting until later. He came directly from a meeting with the presidents of the six security regions where the number of corona infections is rising fastest.
“It went well in Leiden for a long time”, Lenferink reflected. “I am proud of that. But the situation has changed in recent weeks. The number of infections has increased very quickly and Leiden has now moved up from a city with a small number of infections in the lists.
Nice weather and relatively few infections appear to have its downside in Leiden. “Where all those infections come from has been analyzed and then you see what some have already feared. Sloppier behavior, especially among the 16-30 age group. And within that group the Leiden student population stands out. ”
The students contract infections during house parties and hospital evenings and returning holidaymakers are also a source of infections. According to Lenferink, there are no other places, such as the catering industry, where many infections take place. That makes intervention difficult. “The measures often relate to public space. But when it happens behind closed doors, the options are limited. ” In any case, Lenferink aims to ‘promote the intrinsic motivation’ of people to comply much better with the measures.
Lenferink further said that there is intensive contact between the six security regions where the number of corona infections is rising the fastest. Today, national measures have been agreed in consultation with the regions. The cabinet will announce this tomorrow.
