The planned Lely line, a railway line that will connect Groningen with Lelystad, has the possibility of receiving a grant from the European Union. The link will be included in a rail network that the EU considers important and supports financially, the responsible ministers of EU countries agreed.

State Secretary Vivianne Heijnen, responsible for infrastructure and water resources management, is pleased with the proposed decision, she adds Flevoland broadcasting: “Of course there is still a lot of work to do, but this European decision helps us with that and at the same time challenges us to really work on the Lely line.”

The Lelylijn will become part of the so-called extended TEN-T network of the EU, if the European Parliament – as expected – also agrees. How much European money the line will subsequently be able to count on is not yet certain. Fewer billion euros are available for the “extended” TEN-T than for the core network.

The estimated costs for the construction of the Lely Line are between 6 and 9 billion euros.
