“Japan is an earthquake-prone country. It has experienced mega-earthquakes. Let’s not forget the 2011 earthquake of magnitude 9 on the Richter scale with the great tsunami and the nuclear accident in Fukushima,” Geology professor and president of OASP, Efthymios Lekkas, told ERT.
“So we are dealing with an earthquake that occurred two 24 hours ago with a magnitude of 7.1 and immediately after that an alarm was sounded for an impending mega-earthquake. Where did they lean to express such a perception? First, we essentially rely on the size and characteristics of the earthquakes that follow the great earthquake of 7.1 Richter,” said Mr. Lekkas.
He continued: “There are some indicators which essentially show after multiple processing whether it is the main earthquake or not. These indicators probably indicated that it is not the main earthquake. The main earthquake is another earthquake, which can occur within a short period of time, but mainly it is not this one.
The main thing is that in 2011, on March 9, an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 occurred off Sendai and then, two twenty-four hours later, the mega-earthquake of magnitude 9 occurred, which had the known results.
“Loss of 200,000 people”
Mr. Lekkas added that “there is previous experience 13 years ago and in general, mega-earthquakes are actually heralded in Japan by smaller earthquakes. Not all, but a large number.
