The fact that Leica has been involved in other manufacturers’ mobile phones is nothing new, their names have adorned Huawei’s lenses on many models. But now they are launching their first mobile phone under their own name, Leica Leitz Phone 1. But as you can probably guess, it is not Leica that developed this phone, it is a Sharp Aquos R6 that has been rebranded and given a slightly different interface. But what is special about this phone is that it has the largest camera sensor in the industry to date. The one-inch sensor has a resolution of 20 megapixels and the lens was developed together with Leica. For the sake of the unusual, the camera on the Leitz Phone 1 has a round lens cover that is attached with magnets.
Leitz Phone 1 (and thus also Sharp Aquos R6) is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 system chip, which is the leading system chip on the market today and is found in most top models on the market (except Apple).
Unfortunately, it seems that Leitz Phone 1 will mainly be launched in Japan, time will tell if Sharp and Leica choose to launch internationally as well. The price is around SEK 14,500 (converted from the yen).
