Leiter shines in 5 innings of relief, Cubs beat Boston

CHICAGO (AP) — Mark Leiter Jr. pitched 5 1/3 innings in solid relief, Nico Hoerner and Patrick Wisdom each had two hits and the Chicago Cubs capitalized on a pair of Boston errors to beat them 3-1. Saturday at the Boston Red Sox.

Four pitchers combined to limit the Red Sox to five hits in Chicago’s fifth victory in six games.

David Robertson earned his 11th save in 14 chances.

Jackie Bradley Jr., Jarren Duran and Devers had doubles for the Red Sox. Boston went 20-6 in June but has lost two in a row to the rebuilding Cubs.

Chicago starter Alec Mills left with lower back problems before throwing just seven times. Leiter Jr. (2-2), who got the win, allowed three hits, struck out five and walked one. The loss went to the record of Josh Winckowski (3-2).

For the Red Sox, Dominican Franchy Cordero 2-0.

For the Cubs, the Venezuelans Rafael Ortega 3-0; Willson Contreras 4-1. Puerto Rican Nelson Velázquez with a run scored. Dominican Christopher Morel 3-1.
