In Germany, people spend an average of just over nine hours per week on culture. Cultural activities include reading, visiting events and facilities as well as artistic activities, as well as listening to music and playing games – analogue and digital. This results in a value of one hour and 18 minutes per day, as the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced with regard to the year 2022.

Computer games are also considered cultural assets
If culturally relevant activities in a broader sense such as television and streaming are added, the numbers increase significantly again. According to statisticians, people spend almost 15 hours a week on this alone. This would then result in a total average weekly culture time of around 24 hours.
On average, just over three hours a week are spent reading a wide variety of media, both analogue and digital. Computer and other electronic games, which the German Cultural Council classifies as cultural assets, follow with an average value of 2 hours and 12 minutes. Those surveyed still spend almost two hours a week visiting cinemas, theaters or museums.
Young people spend almost 18 hours a week on cultural activities
Schoolchildren and students spend the most time on cultural activities (excluding television and streaming), almost 18 hours a week, as the statistics show. For comparison: For retired people it was only 11 hours and 24 minutes.
For schoolchildren and students, more than half of the time (9.5 hours) is spent playing computer games. However, the cost of going to the cinema, theater or museum is also relatively high (2 hours and 11 minutes), while pensioners only spend an average of one hour and 39 minutes per week on this.
If television and streaming are included as culturally relevant in a broader sense, retired people have the highest value for this (31 hours and 44 minutes).
