In their spare time, Germans love to use the Internet. This emerges from the new free time monitoring of the BAT Foundation for Future Issues in Hamburg. As a result, 97% said they were online at least once a week.
In second place is watching television (86 per cent), followed by “dealing with the computer” and listening to music (82 per cent each). This is the result of Leisure Monitor 2022. “For the first time, social media is among the most common recreational activities,” says leisure researcher Ulrich Reinhardt. According to this, 67% use Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Snapchat or Twitter at least once a week.
More stress for free time among young people
It is clear that stress in your free time is becoming more and more common. The most stressful thing for people is waiting in line or stuck in traffic. And the younger you are, the more annoyed you are. “Leisure stress is much more pronounced among young people than among the elderly,” Reinhardt said.
Leisure researchers have not noticed any major changes since the Corona years. “Today hardly anyone goes to the drive-in cinema. Most of the rooms have been renovated and most of the gardens are in excellent condition,” says Reinhardt.
Over 3,000 people interviewed
For the present study, more than 3,000 people between the ages of 18 and 74 were asked about their leisure behavior and the topic of “stress in free time”.
