Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – For security reasons, the tower on Freiburg’s local mountain Schauinsland has been closed. “This blockage applies immediately and for an indefinite period of time,” the city said on Thursday. The reason: The stability is no longer fully guaranteed, which was found out during tests.
The Schauinsland tower has stood on the summit at an altitude of 1284 meters since 1980. On beautiful summer weekends, several thousand people climb the tower, from which, on a clear day, you can see the Alps, the Vosges and the Black Forest peaks. According to the city, the refurbishment of the 31 meter high tower is to begin this year.
The construction consists of four Douglas firs and a triangular, covered viewing platform. Horizontal crosspieces on five levels between the tree trunks ensure that the tower remains stable. “Now an expert report has found damage to some of the crossbars,” the city said.
