Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – During the warm season, authorities warn against swimming in the Rhine. The bans on swimming in the river are often ignored in summer, the waterway and shipping office Upper Rhine announced on Monday in Freiburg. Inexperienced swimmers are often drawn to the Rhine. The dangers would be underestimated. Ships and motor boats caused waves and currents as well as rapidly changing water levels. Swimming in a radius of 200 meters around shipping facilities, port entrances and bridges is life-threatening and therefore prohibited.
The shipping police said there was a risk of being pulled under water or in fairways. This risk is high even for experienced swimmers. It is therefore advised to only stay near the bank. The German Life Saving Society (DLRG), which is responsible for water rescue, generally advises against swimming in the Rhine and other large rivers for safety reasons.
