Thanks to state-of-the-art technologies, the Leipzig Süd thermal power plant is already one of the lowest-emission gas turbine power plants in the world. The heart of the new gas power plant are two gas turbines with a total of 125 megawatts of electrical output. These are already capable of burning high proportions of green hydrogen. That’s why the power plant will be operated with green hydrogen in the future. Some of this will be generated on site in our own facilities.
Germany as a hydrogen republic
State Secretary Judith Pirscher took part in the opening as part of the hydrogen forum. “Wherever the use of hydrogen makes sense, it should be used. In this way, we are moving Germany forward on the path to becoming a hydrogen republic,” said Pirscher. Only with green hydrogen can Germany achieve its climate goals by 2045. At the same time, we would give our economy a boost, said Pirscher. To achieve this, Germany must integrate hydrogen into its energy system on a large scale.
Two billion for hydrogen research
The BMBF is therefore investing more than two billion euros in research and development along the entire value chain. The Federal Research Ministry’s largest initiative to date is: Hydrogen lead projects. Business and science are working together to develop solutions to make the German hydrogen economy operational as quickly as possible.
