Leipzig (dpa) – When RB Leipzig was finally allowed to play in its almost full stadium again, the game of the runners-up was very reminiscent of that of ex-coach Julian Nagelsmann. Beautiful, safe on the ball, but also extremely inefficient.
Leipzig shot 14 times against Eintracht Frankfurt on goal, won over 60 percent of the duels and, according to Nagelsmann’s successor Domenico Tedesco, had “seven really clear chances”. But in the end, the 43,058 fans saw a 0:0 that only the people of Frankfurt were happy about.
It may be a luxury problem that Leipzig is now catching up with again. Under Jesse Marsch there were clearly other concerns before Tedesco trimmed the team back to success and even won away. That’s why the coach doesn’t want to hang the topic of usury so high. “That’s not an issue for us,” said the 36-year-old, adding the reason immediately afterwards: “We scored six goals in Berlin and scored six goals in Fürth.” Since you can ever approve a zero number.
Post, crossbar and trap
The way alone makes you think. Sure, there were posts, latte and a strong Eintracht goalkeeper Kevin Trapp. But there was also this almost grotesquely missed chance from Yussuf Poulsen, who had already circled Trapp, but then didn’t dare to finish and stumbled the ball. Or the goal of the offside Christopher Nkunku, who ignored the better placed next man. Tedesco graciously described it as “one or the other unfortunate scene”.
The coach will hope that the zero against Frankfurt was unique. Because the program in April has it all and should be decisive for the evaluation of the season. In the league you have to play against Dortmund, Hoffenheim, Leverkusen, Union Berlin and Mönchengladbach. There are also two quarter-finals in the Europa League against Atalanta Bergamo and a possible semi-final first leg and the cup semi-final against Union. A maximum of nine games in four weeks, all of which you basically have to win.
Maybe a change of scenery will displace the missed win against Frankfurt anyway. Almost all Leipzig pros are on international trips, Tedesco spoke of only having five players available. When the rest come back, there should be completely different topics in the fast-moving football business.
