Rail strikes are causing severe restrictions in Saxony

Leipzig – Of the Nationwide strike of the German train drivers’ union (GDL) in the German train has led to numerous train cancellations and delays in since Thursday morning Saxony.

The strike in passenger traffic started at 2 a.m., a railway spokeswoman confirmed on Thursday morning.
Rail travelers therefore have to be prepared for massive restrictions. In long-distance traffic, only about one in four trains runs as planned, with regional trains and S-Bahn trains running only around 40 percent of all trains.
In Saxony, passengers must expect disruptions on the regional trains RB 113 and RE 50 between Leipzig and Geithain or Leipzig and Dresden, as well as on the S-Bahn S2, S3, S4 and S5 in and around Leipzig and the S1 and S3 in and around Dresden.

The union has been on strike in freight traffic since Wednesday afternoon. Despite a new offer from the railway, the GDL resumed the labor dispute in the night as planned in passenger transport.

It is the third time in just a few weeks that hundreds of thousands of commuters and rail travelers have been hit by the work stoppages.
The GDL wants the strike to last until Tuesday night. The union announced several strike rallies for Thursday, Friday and Monday. GDL boss Claus Weselsky (62) is planning appearances in Leipzig, Nuremberg, Magdeburg and Berlin.
The train drivers’ union is fighting for more money and better working conditions for its members. With the strike scheduled for more than five days in the current collective bargaining round at Deutsche Bahn, the GDL wants to emphasize its demands for a total of 3.2 percent more money over a period of 28 months and a corona premium of 600 euros.

The strike of the German train drivers’ union (GDL) had hardly any impact on the streets in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia on Thursday morning.
The usual morning traffic was registered, there were no more traffic jams due to the strike, said the traffic warning services of the three countries. Also in the cities and the access roads there is not more going on than usual.
The traffic situation could change at the weekend when numerous holidaymakers return. “So far, however, there is no evidence that the strike will have extreme effects,” said a spokesman for the Saxon traffic warning service.
The GDL has been on strike nationwide for five days since Thursday morning. Three quarters of all long-distance trains have been canceled.
Restrictions must be expected in regional and S-Bahn traffic, especially in eastern Germany, because the number of train drivers involved in strikes is higher there than in the west.
