In cooperation with the city of Leipzig and the Leipzig Bach Festival, the Calmus Ensemble is sending a sign of peace and reconciliation from the Bach city of Leipzig on the occasion of Johann Sebastian Bach’s 337th birthday. On March 21 at 8:30 p.m., the virtual concert “Bach for five” from Leipzig’s Thomaskirche will be streamed in parallel on the YouTube channel of the Calmus Ensemble and on the Facebook channel of the Bach Festival.
Access is free. The audience is asked to purchase virtual tickets of an appropriate amount.
The proceeds of the concert will help young people from Ukraine and will be donated to the members of the youth orchestra “Youth symphony orchestra of Ukraine”, founded in 2017 by the conductor Oksana Lyniv.
“We are very moved by the events in Ukraine and of course we want to help all the people who live there in fear or who are fleeing. True to our Bach Festival motto ‘BACH – We are FAMILY!’ The streamed concert of the Calmus Ensemble on Bach’s birthday now offers the worldwide Bach community the chance to give the great musicians of the Ukrainian Youth Symphony Orchestra and their families a helping hand, at least financially,” says Prof. Michael Maul from the Leipzig Bach Archive.
The concert begins with the song “Bozhe velykyi, yedynyi” by the most important Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko, who studied at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1867 to 1869. The “spiritual hymn” asks for protection, freedom and happiness for Ukraine.
In addition, compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach are on the program. In addition to his motet “Jesu, meine Freude”, collages and transcriptions specially prepared for the Calmus Ensemble can be heard – works that comfort, reflect and touch.
