Leipzig. The Leipzig Christmas tree is up! A number of onlookers watched the spectacle, which began at the market on Thursday morning around 8:30 a.m. The spruce tree, which weighs around four tons, was released from its transport lock, carefully lifted from the trailer, gently erected by crane and hoisted into the tree sleeve, which is embedded in the pavement of the market.

The tree had grown in Vogtland near Klingenthal for around 60 years. Its private owner had offered it for the Leipzig Christmas market because the giant was on a slope and close to buildings and would have had to be removed soon anyway. This time around a dozen private individuals offered their trees. However, most of these needlers were too small or could not have been easily struck and transported.
The good piece was felled in Zwota on Wednesday and brought to Leipzig by special transport that night. The low-loader left Vogtland at two o’clock and arrived at the Leipzig market at 4.30 a.m. The felling and installation was carried out by Wald Jacob GmbH & Co. KG together with the Leipzig Fire Department and the City Lighting Department of the Mobility and Civil Engineering Office.

On site, the trunk was sharpened with a chainsaw, then the fire brigade crane carefully raised the tree, which was hanging in slings. Everything was ready around 10 a.m. A group of children who happened to be at the market happily sang “Oh Christmas Tree”.
Market office manager Walter Ebert was happy when the Christmas tree was happily in place. “It’s always very exciting. It has to be set up very carefully so that nothing breaks.” He is satisfied with this year’s specimen: “A beautiful, evenly grown tree and nice and dense.” Last year the choice fell on a Douglas fir from Torgau. However, it was somewhat laughed at by visitors because it was crooked and leaned significantly towards the barefoot alley.
Kerstin Kalkofen from Leipzig also watched the spectacle for a long time and took photos. Your first impression: “The tree is okay, but it could be a bit more massive. But when everything is beautifully decorated, it definitely looks good.” The 39-year-old is already looking forward to the Leipzig Christmas market: “I will definitely go. I need the new children’s cup.”
On Friday the tree is decorated with baubles and lights. Next week the construction of the Christmas market and the installation of lighting in the surrounding streets will begin. The Christmas tree will remain in front of the Old Town Hall until January 3rd. It is then dismantled and transported away by city forestry trainees.
