Leiden students protest against cameras at university

A group of students from Leiden University briefly blocked access to a university building at Cleveringaplaats this afternoon. They protested against the cameras that have been hanging in the university since last year.

According to the university, the cameras are intended to measure student numbers, but they can do much more. “Such as measuring your height, estimating your age, determining gender and seeing whether you are wearing a face mask,” says initiator Joris Wiebes. Broadcasting West. “If you combine that with a poorly secured network, then suddenly your data is no longer so safe.”

A total of 371 cameras were installed last year, university magazine Mare reports. They hang at entrances to university buildings and lecture halls.
