Leiden ranking 2024: the scientific recognition of France

The Leiden University Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS), in the Netherlands, has just published its higher education ranking. The latest ranking awards 32 French institutions ranked according to their scientific performance, among 1,500 major universities from all over the world. According to the French ministry of research, the 2024 ranking is a proof of the “scientific international reputation of France”.

The Leiden ranking differs from other rankings, because it doesn’t measure education, but research. As the French ministry of higher education and research points out, the Leiden ranking “provides an approach that is complementary with other international rankings by bringing value, in additional the commitment of French university agents in terms of scientific publications, to the contribution of institutions in the field of open science, to collaborations between institutions, and to the rate of women among authors”.
