Due to the warm weather, many runners of the Leiden Marathon have become unwell. Safety could no longer be guaranteed and that is why the mayor, on the advice of the Hollands-Midden Safety Region, made the decision to cancel the marathon. The 10 kilometers had already been canceled.
Peter van der Velden, mayor of Leiden:
It is very unfortunate for the organization, the volunteers and the runners that we have had to stop this edition of the Leiden Marathon. However, too many people became unwell because of the heat. The pressure on ambulances, hospitals and other emergency services became too great, making no other decision possible. The safety and health of people comes first.
