Leicester scientists: these two simple questions will help you understand that you are an alcoholic

These two questions reveal alcohol addiction

British scientists from the University of Leicester conducted a meta-study, looking at 17 case studies on this topic and deduced simple method to detect alcohol addiction – its accuracy is 87%.

Experts have identified only 2 questions, honest answers to which should be enough to suggest alcohol addiction. This method can greatly facilitate the work of general practitioners, say the researchers.

Questions can be asked to the patient during the conversation, without even arousing his suspicions – by the way, in this case you can get a spontaneous, and therefore more truthful answer.

  • How often do you have six or more drinks at a time?

  • Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to relieve stress or feel better?

If the patient answers “often” or even “regularly” to the first question, this indicates his problematic relationship with alcohol.

A “yes” answer to the second question is also a clear indication: combined, the two questions give an 87% chance that the person is addicted to alcohol, writes Focus Edition.

A British research team advises those who are at risk, by answering yes to these two questions, to go CAGE test for alcoholism from 4 questions or AUDIT questionnaire.

With their help, alcohol dependence can be diagnosed correctly with a probability of more than 90%.
