Brendan Rodgers’s Leicester, 3rd in the Premier table, is a tough test for Frank Lampard’s Chelsea on Tuesday, who was able to breathe on Saturday and place 7th after beating Fulham (I0-1). The victory served to alleviate the pressure on Lampard due to his team’s results, away not only from the fight for the title but also outside the Champions League positions.
Not surprisingly, the 1-0 win against Fulham was Chelsea’s first Premier victory since 21 December, when they beat West Ham 3-0. Since then, two defeats (3-1 in the derby against Arsenal and 1-3 against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City) and a draw (1-1 against Aston Villa) before the victory against the team led by Scott Parker.
Lampard is going through very difficult weeks and Leicester is another very difficult test for his Chelsea. The ‘Foxes’ come from defeating Southampton (2-0) and are only 2 points behind the leader, Manchester United, and tied with City, which this Wednesday will play its pending match against Aston Villa and can be in the lead of the English championship.
One of the things that particularly worries Lampard is the situation of Timo Werner, one of his star signings last summer and who has not scored 10 games. The coach ‘blue’ explained that he works with the forward to try to regain confidence. Heading into this Tuesday, Lampard could not count on N’Golo Kanté, who has not recovered from a tendon injury, but with Andreas Christensen.
Brendan Rodgers, Leicester coach, for his part, confirmed Dennis Praet’s withdrawal due to a muscle injury and that Papy Mendy is doubtful due to a neck problem.
