LEICESTER, England (AP) — Leicester and Everton remain in the grip of relegation in the Premier League after pulling off an electrifying 2-2 draw on Monday.
Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi’s volley goal in the 54th minute salvaged a point for Everton, penultimate in the standings with four games remaining as they battled to extend their 69-year tenure in English soccer’s top flight.
Leicester, Premier League champion just seven years ago, managed to get out of the fateful zone but sustained by having a better goal difference over Leeds and Nottingham Forest. All three teams are one point ahead of Everton.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted a penalty that the attacker himself caused, after being pushed in the back by Timothy Castagne, putting Everton ahead on 15 minutes.
Center back Caglar Soyuncu equalized in the 22nd for Leicester by capitalizing on a rebound from defender Wout Faes.
Leicester took the lead for the first time in the 33rd thanks to Jamie Verdy’s score after an assist from midfielder James Maddison.
After Iwobi signed the 2-2, Leicester generated the clearest chances. Vardy’s header was cleared on the line and the attacker also fired just wide after goalkeeper Jordan Pickford missed the start.
Everton face a demanding schedule in the final stretch of the season, visiting Brighton, at home against leaders Manchester City, a trip to Wolverhampton and the home game against Bournemouth.
Instead, Leicester will face Fulham, Liverpool, Newcastle and West Ham in their last four meetings.
