Leica SL3 Rumors: 60MP Sensor, 8K Video, and Compact Body

This article was written by Sultan Al-Qahtani – The Leica SL2 is marketed as a direct competitor to professional system cameras such as the Nikon Z8 or Sony A9, and like these cameras, it uses a high-resolution fixed sensor, an electronic fast viewfinder, and a variety of lenses.

According to the latest information from LeicaRumors as well as rumors from the Chinese social network Weibo, Leica will announce the next generation, Leica SL, in the first quarter of 2024, that is, by the end of March at the latest.

The most significant upgrade is the 60MP full-frame sensor, already known from the Leica M11 and Leica Q3. Not only does this sensor promise a higher resolution than the SL2’s 46.7-megapixel sensor, it also promises greater dynamic range.

The sensor is stabilized, which is intended to enable a longer 6.5 f-stop exposure time without a tripod instead of the 5.5 f-stop on the Leica SL2.

According to current rumours, the camera can capture up to 9 images per second, as this value most likely indicates active autofocus and automatic exposure, as the Leica SL2 can already record 24 images per second without these features.

Leica is also preparing video upgrades: maximum resolution is expected to rise from 5K to 8K, with the frame rate capped at 30fps and only part of the sensor being used.

C4K videos can be recorded at 4096 x 2160 resolution at 60 fps over the full sensor area.

Furthermore, the body of the Leica SL3 will also be revised and made somewhat more compact.
