Leica Introduces New $9,500 Camera with Content Authentication and Watermarking System

Leica, one of the oldest and most respected camera companies in the world, has introduced a new $9,500 camera. One of its key features of this model was the function of counteracting digital manipulation. The M11-P is designed for professional photojournalists and, in addition to producing stunning images, includes a new watermarking system. Leica says this will provide metadata for each image with a special stamp of authenticity.

In the era of active development of generative AI, one of the main problems has become the spread of fake media content. From deepfakes to digital photo montages, artificial images have taken over the internet. One solution to this problem that is being actively discussed is the use of watermarks. They allow identification data to be automatically entered into the image’s metadata, which subsequently facilitates authentication.

Verifying the authenticity of visual content in the digital age has become an increasingly complex and pressing task. With the ability to provide this proof, we are once again reinforcing trust in digital content and reaffirming the authority of Leica cameras in documenting world events.

Leica says the M11-P produces images with what it calls Content Credentials, which are “encrypted metadata that complies with the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) standard.” CAI is a newly formed industry group consisting of media companies, technology platforms and non-profit organizations.

Leica M11-P Camera Specifications:

Secure chip for Content Authenticity Initiative technology

Their goal is to create an open industry standard for verifying the authenticity of content. The CAI model uses cryptographic hashing to add identifying signatures to the metadata of images, allowing them to be verified as authentic. If CAI-processed images are digitally modified, the system also records a history of modifications. These marks of authenticity can be checked online on the specialized CAI portal.
