LEGO’s Progress Towards Sustainable Bricks: From Recycled Plastics to New Materials

Two years ago, the toy manufacturer LEGO announced the first brick made from recycled plastic. It was also the company’s first serious step towards sustainability, but it seems that LEGO has abandoned these plans. The company has informed that it will no longer make blocks from recycled plastic, claiming that such material is not sufficiently sustainable and does not reduce carbon emissions.

In 2021, LEGO unveiled its first brick made from recycled PET plastic bottles, which were provided by suppliers approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority. Ten 2×4 LEGO bricks can be made from one one liter plastic bottle.

The company has now announced that it wants to make blocks from other sustainable materials by 2032, but has not specified which ones. A step towards this goal is slowly being taken. LEGO is currently testing and developing bricks made from a variety of alternative sustainable materials, including other types of recycled plastics, as well as plastics made from e-methanol, for example.
