The Lego Group has announced that it will stop producing Mindstorms sets, which allow you to build robots from various parts and program their behavior. Production of the Mindstorms brand kits will end at the end of the year, while the Mindstorms Robot Inventor app, a digital platform used to program and control robots, will continue to run until the end of 2024. The division’s employees will be busy developing of other business areas of the company.
The first Lego Mindstorms sets went on sale in 1998. They were positioned as a revolutionary educational tool developed by MIT engineers, through which children and adults could create robotic systems from Lego parts.
Mindstorms kits have gained popularity largely due to the ease of developing control software using the so-called. visual programming. Over the years, enthusiasts have built a wide variety of robotic systems from Mindstorms sets, and Lego has periodically updated the series, giving users more and more options for building robots.
The latest version of the Mindstorms kits was announced in June 2020. Note that Lego, apparently, does not rule out further development of the management in the future, as the Mindstorms brand will be retained by the company. At the same time, the company will continue to release SPIKE Prime kits, which offer the same functionality as Mindstorms, but focus on the educational segment rather than retail.
