LEGO Star Wars Leaks 2021: LEGO vs. MandRproductions | PROMOBRICKS

Last week we covered the US LEGO YouTuber Ryan McCullough. This one had on his channel MandRproductions uploaded a video detailing the upcoming LEGO Star Wars sets for summer 2021. Apparently he had already had a first look at the sets in a LEGO catalog or something similar.

Now this video, which has already had over 200,000 views, has disappeared. The reason for this is a request from LEGO to take the video offline or no longer make it publicly visible. Like Ryan about his Twitter-Account reports, this demand was accompanied by the threat of a copyright strike:

LEGO threatens MandRproductions with a copyright strike

In our estimation, however, no copyrights were violated in the video. Ryan didn’t show any pictures of the sets, just described them very carefully. The whole thing is explosive anyway. If a YouTuber collects three strikes, his channel will be irrevocably deleted. So the excitement is understandable.

On the other hand, we can also understand how LEGO works. Ryan’s YouTube channel is an officially recognized LEGO fan medium. This means that in addition to free review sets, he also enjoys a few other benefits. In return, LEGO expects restraint on “critical” topics.

The bottom line is that LEGO provides a perfect example of the here Streisand effect from. The unsuccessful attempt to keep leaks a secret now draws all attention to the situation. We also see the leaks as indirectly and unintentionally confirmed by LEGO.

What do you think of the whole situation? Do you understand Ryan’s anger or do you understand LEGO’s position? Let us know your opinion as a comment under this article!
