LEGO has reconstructed Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ in 2,316 small blocks | Art & Literature

Lego is clearly going on the creative tour and put together a set with 2,316 blocks with which you can recreate the world-famous painting ‘The Starry Night’ by Van Gogh.

When the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City bought “The Starry Night” from a private collector in 1941, the painting was not well known. In the 81 years since then, the artwork has become extremely popular and has provided inspiration for various artists and designers. From a hit single for singer Don McLean in 1971 to mass-produced items such as scarves, umbrellas and water bottles. Now LEGO is joining in, inviting fans to reproduce the Dutch painter’s brushstrokes in brick form.

The set of 2,316 building blocks is intended for adults and retails for $169.99. It was designed by Truman Cheng, a 25-year-old man from Hong Kong. Cheng submitted his design on the LEGO Ideas platform. This platform puts fans’ ideas to a public vote and then turns them into reality. Other winning ideas from the platform include a working typewriter, the house from the movie “Home Alone” and a scene from the “Seinfeld” series.

Van Gogh was inspired to paint “The Starry Night” by the view from his window at the Saint-Paul de Mausole psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy. 133 years later, Cheng was playing with Lego when he noticed that when he arranged the bricks in random intervals, they resembled Van Gogh’s signature brushstrokes.

In conjunction with the release, LEGO has launched a competition for fans to submit their own mini builds inspired by the night sky. The winning designs will be part of an installation to be seen in the lobby of the MoMA in New York this summer.
