Legislative Body Extends Tenure of Village Heads in Indonesia to Promote Stability and Development

WARTAKOTALIVE.COM, JAKARTA – In the interest of the people, the Legislative Body (Baleg) of the People’s Representative Council (DPR) of the Republic of Indonesia finally agreed to extend the tenure of village heads (kades).

The term of office of the village head, which was originally six years, was extended to nine years.

Furthermore, village heads can nominate themselves and be elected twice, so they can serve 18 consecutive years.

The agreement was conveyed by the Chairman of Baleg RI Supratman Andi Agtas in the Working Committee (Panja) Meeting for Drafting the Second Amendment to Law (UU) Number 6 of 2014 concerning the DPR Baleg Village at the Senayan Parliament Complex, Tanah Abang, Jakarta Center on Thursday (23/6/2023).

Supratman submitted a proposal to extend the tenure of the village head for the benefit of the people and considerations for maintaining village stability.

“Regarding the extension, one of our considerations is the stability of the village,” he was quoted as saying Kompas.comFriday (23/6/2023).

Supratman made this statement after attending the Village Bill Committee Meeting at the Senayan Parliament Complex, Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta on Thursday (23/6/2023).

He considered that the friction caused by village head elections (Pilkades) often disrupted village stability.

According to Supratman, the disruption to village stability has disrupted growth and development in the village.

Whereas the village should be the spearhead of economic growth.

He revealed that his party did not want friction between communities to disturb village stability which could have an impact on development delays.

“To become the locomotive of our economic growth in the future, stability is important for us to maintain,” said Supratman.

According to him, the proposed term of office for the village head will not be extended in terms of the current Village Law, namely the term of office for a village head can be held for up to 18 years.

The Gerindra Party politician said that the agreement at the meeting of the Panja for Drafting the Village Bill concerned proposed changes related to the periodization of the village head’s term of office, along with the time period in one period.
