In the last decade, Legia won the championship and the Polish Cup six times, but never the Super Cup. During this time, she approached the fight for this trophy six times (she should have twice more, but the matches did not take place) and always lost, although she was the host of the match five times.
The Super Cup has inaugurated the season so far, and usually at the beginning of the games the Warsaw team was in a bad shape. The loss in the fight for this trophy heralded problems in the league and the European arena. The scenario has usually been similar in recent years. Winning the championship, defeating the Super Cup, failing in cups and changing the coach. Everything is going the same way now. Today, however, the legionnaires will try to break the bad tradition and win the first Polish Super Cup in 12 years.
Legia – Cracovia: A strange match
This time they will join the fight in very unusual circumstances. This is the strangest edition in the history of this competition in 16 years. Then, after the end of the league game (!) Between Lech and Wisła Kraków, a penalty shootout competition was organized. The people from Poznań performed them better and they won the trophy.
Now the match takes place during the break for the team training camp. Legia will join it without six players who left for training camps, which is nothing special. More unusual is that the coach also left the team. Today Czesław Michniewicz will lead the youth team in an important qualifying match of the European Championship with Serbia at 6 p.m.
Marek Saganowski will replace him on the bench. – It is the coach who chooses the line-up, I lead the line when it comes to current affairs, then together with Przemek Małecki (another assistant – editor’s note) we will respond – Saganowski explained during the press conference.
Second to Sagan
This will be the second game that he will lead the team from the bench. Previously, it had happened in April 2019 against Lechia Gdańsk, when he was replacing Aleksandar Vukovic. The first trainer was serving a sentence for behavior in an earlier meeting with Lech. Legia won with the players of Gdańsk 3: 1, which then seemed to be crucial for the fate of the championship, which, however, it did not win (Piast Gliwice triumphed). But then Vuković came with the team, he held a briefing, etc. Now “Sagan” is training, and when he comes to mobilize the team to fight, his superior will still be busy meeting the Serbs. – It’s a colossal difference. Back then, coach Vuković was with us an hour and a half before the match – agrees Saganowski.
Despite numerous weaknesses, the composition of the Legia still looks good. The Warsaw club has a very large team and Saganowski has no trouble collecting 11 players for the game. It does not have to reach for players from deeper reserves. Nevertheless, players who have played a bit less recently, like Andre Martins, may get a chance. The Portuguese in previous seasons was a certainty for the squad, but recently he was put aside and did not play in the three previous matches of the Warsaw players.
