Even after forty years, the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser 70 is a modern off-roader. The Japanese automaker has introduced new improvements to the popular classic, thanks to which it will attract more demanding customers. The new turbodiesel also supports connectivity via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
At the beginning of this August, Toyota unveiled a new generation of the legendary Land Cruiser. And now it also adds a non-traditional surprise, because after 40 years it has also modernized the still popular significantly older generation with the internal designation 70. It is still the favorite choice of all customers looking for a genuine, robust off-road vehicle in the most demanding conditions. The SUV originally launched in 1984 is also returning to the domestic Japanese market.
You can recognize the newer improved “seventy” at first glance by the more modern front with a radiator grille inspired by the latest Land Cruiser 250. In Japan, it will be sold with a new turbocharged 2.8-liter diesel engine with 201 horsepower and 500 newton meters with a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. However, the Australian spec will be significantly more interesting.
On the counter, the modernized old Land Cruiser will be sold with a more purist 4.5-liter diesel with 202 horsepower and 430 newton meters, mated to a five-speed manual transmission and four-wheel drive. An alternative will also be a newer four-cylinder from the Japanese market. And while it will only be sold as an SUV in the land of the rising sun, Australians will also be able to order a utility pick-up.
Innovations are also presented in the interior, where a new 6.7” infotainment touchscreen with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity via cable appears. Improvements can also be found on the instrument panel, which now has a modern 4.2″ display. Even a 40-year-old Land Cruiser can thus warn of unintentional lane departures and warns of speed limit signs. Automatic main headlights are also new.
In Australia, the newly improved Toyota Land Cruiser 70 will appear before the end of this year, in Japan it will go on sale during this winter. At the same time, the state-of-the-art Toyota Land Cruiser 250, introduced at the beginning of August, is to appear on global markets at the beginning of next year 2024.
