According to Lestander Jr., his father died at his home in Arjeplog of natural causes.

Lestander won gold in the individual race at the 1960 Olympics in Squaw Valley, becoming the first-ever Olympic champion in biathlon. Until 2010, he remained the only Swede to win gold in biathlon at the Men’s Games.

Also on account of Lestander bronze in the relay at the 1961 World Championships.
