Legendary saxophonist Hal Singer dies at 100

The legendary saxophonist Hal Singer passed away at the age of 100 in France, without so far the causes of death have been specified, announced the mayoralty of Chatou, near Paris, where the musician had lived for 20 years.

“We regret to report the death of Hal Singer that occurred on August 18, 2020 at the age of 100. Weakened in recent years, Hal Singer passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and family.” announced the city council of this city in a statement.

“He was an extraordinary witness of his time, he went down in history. He was born in a United States very marked by racial segregation, which also suffered, but at the same time he knew how to transcend that situation,” added Chatou Mayor Eric Dumoulin.

Hal Singe married a French woman and decided to settle in Chatou in 2002 where he was appointed Commander of Arts and Letters in 1999.

Funeral ceremonies will take place on Saturday morning, in the strictest privacy, the mayor’s office told the AFP agency.

Hal Singer, Born on October 8, 1919 in the United States, he was a great jazz figure who acted with Ray Charles and Billie Holiday.

During his 70-year career, the saxophonist recorded about a hundred records, first in his native country and later in France, where he settled in 1965, according to the biography on his website.

In 1942, at the famous club “52nd Street” from New York he performed with Don Byas, Roy Eldrige, Red Allen and Billie Holiday, after making his debut in black orchestras of the American Southwest.

His international tours took him to Latin America, Africa and Asia, after having passed through American concert halls, in the company of the greatest, such as Ray Charles.

In 1989, he played himself in Russian director Pavel Lunguin’s “Taxi Blues,” which won the award for best director at the Cannes Film Festival the following year.
