Legendary Liverpool goalkeeper Ray Clemence (72) has passed away | Premier League

Ray Clemence made his debut at the age of 17 for the then third division team Scunthorpe, but he would soon be picked up by Liverpool, where he was no longer under the crossbar from 1970.

Clemence celebrated great success with Liverpool in the 1970s, including 5 titles, 2 UEFA cups and 3 European Cup victories for national champions.

Clemence was there in 1976 and 1978 when Liverpool took on Club Brugge in the final of the UEFA Cup and European Cup I respectively. He was also a fixture at England in the 1970s, but did not play at any World Cup. He was present at the 1980 European Championship, including in the match against the Red Devils. He finished at 61 caps.

After his long and rich career at Liverpool, Clemence was still under the bar at Tottenham, adding another trophy and UEFA cup to his record.

Clemence went on to play more than 1,000 games in his career, which will remain inseparable from Liverpool. “Numerous superlatives come to mind when we think about his career at Anfield,” Liverpool writes in an obit on the club site. “Yet we can summarize everything in 2 words: excellent goalkeeper.”
