Pankaj Udhas; Ghazal Prince of Exiles
Pankaj Udhas, the famous singer who popularized the genre of ghazal singing, is passing away, but the songs he sang remain in the hearts of people. Omar Khayyam’s Rubaiyat was made into a four-cassette album in the late eighties. During his school days, when ghazals were becoming an important part of musical enjoyment, there was hardly a day when he did not hum his lines.
There is no Malayalee who does not cherish the song ‘Chitti Aai Hai…’ from the Hindi movie ‘Nam’. Nikhlona Benakab…, Chand Ra.., Ishq Bada Harjai…, Na Kaj Rere… Chandi Jesa Rank… and Ahat, Khwab, Aashiyan, Nasha, Mehfil etc. ‘Teen Mosam’ produced by brothers Manhar Udas and Nirmal Udas He is leaving with over 60 albums, many film songs including Naam, Mohra, Saajan, hundreds of memorable songs and ghazals and a Malayalam ghazal by Jitesh Sundaram – ‘Ee Nilavil Peitha Muin…’ by Rafeeq Ahmed. In 2006, the country honored him with the Padma Shri.
In the 1990s, when he was asked to sing a favorite song for a second time at the ghazal sandhya for invited guests at the Dubai World Trade Centre, he gladly accepted. While leaving, he also autographed the pocket book in which he wrote his telephone number. Later, I was lucky enough to enjoy his concerts many times.
Born as the youngest of three sons in a wealthy family in Gujarat, Pankaj, like his brothers, was fascinated by music. Although there are many ghazal singers, Pankaj is called the ‘Ghazal Prince’ by the fans.
