Legendary Dutch Football Star Johan Neeskens Passes Away at 73: A Tribute to His Iconic Career

The Dutch Football Association announced the death of former national team star Johan Neeskens, who scored the team’s main goal in the 1974 World Cup final loss to West Germany, at the age of 73. The Netherlands Federation that Neeskens died yesterday, Sunday, in Algeria, where he was for a training project.
The Dutch federation said in a statement: “International football has lost a legend. Neeskens took part in 49 international matches and scored 17 goals between 1970 and 1981. He also took part in the World Cup final in the 1974 and 1978 editions, and scored an early penalty in the Cup final the 1974 World Cup against West Germany, who managed to come back to win 1/2.
Neeskens won the Champions League three times with Ajax alongside Johan Cruyff between 1969 and 1974, before spending five years at Barcelona to win the Cup Winners’ Cup and five years playing for the American team New York Cosmos .
Later Neeskens worked as a coach, and he also worked as an assistant coach in the Dutch national team and in Barcelona.
