In Great Britain, the next classic has been equipped with an electric powertrain. It is a Citroën DS, whose original heart has disappeared.
Whoever sees this DS for the first time, thinks of a model from 1971 to watch. Yet that is not the case, because this Godin has an electric powertrain and therefore a plug connection.
That is done by the specialists of Electrogenic, who are familiar with the conversion of classics. In this case, they have replaced the 2.0-litre four-cylinder, originally developed for the Citroën Traction Avant, with its own ‘Hyper 9’ electric motor. Where we are normally not so happy with the removal of the original powertrains from iconic classics, it is less of a problem here. The engine was by no means the strongest point of the DS. While the complete car was far, far ahead of its time, the four-cylinder was just an outdated engine.
Better performances
In addition, the electric motor provides better performance, because it delivers 121 hp and 235 Nm to the front wheels. The original gearbox has also been preserved. In addition, the characteristic of a smooth electric motor naturally fits the concept of the DS, because everything revolved around comfort and flexibility.
The battery pack measures 48.5 kWh and is good for a range of 225 kilometers, although the manufacturer also offers a larger battery that enables a range of about 320 kilometers. Charging is possible with a maximum of 29 kW, which means that it takes about two hours to fully charge the battery again.
Suspension has been preserved
Still, there is one big question that will occupy DS enthusiasts, which is what happens to the hydropneumatic suspension system. Electrogenic indicates that the complete system has been preserved, although it has tinkered with the mechanical hydraulic pump. It has been replaced by an electric variant, which according to its makers is much quieter. Moreover, necessary, because the mechanical pump was controlled by the combustion engine, which is therefore no longer there. The question remains what all the extra weight of the batteries does to the comfortable and complex suspension system of the DS, but the manufacturer does not reveal anything about that.
What Electrogenic has barely done anything about is the exterior. On the back there is only a unique emblem with the text ‘DS EV Électronique’. A bit duplication, if you ask us. Of course the exhausts have been removed, and there is a plug connection where the fuel valve used to be. Because Electrogenic converts classics to the wishes of the customer, the company does not give away a price for the Citroën DS.
