“Can win Wimbledon anytime”

The 56-year-old Swede is expecting a strong Federer comeback. In Australia and Wimbledon, Federer basically still has a chance of winning. “He’s now absent from Australia this year. But if he has no physical problems, he can rightly hope for the trophy at Wimbledon, ”said the Eurosport expert, who has often been critical of Federer in recent years. “He can win there anytime.”

Wilander, himself a 7-time Grand Slam winner and ex-world number 1, expects less from Federer at the other major tournaments. “Roland Garros and the US Open will be more difficult matters for him. Anyone who struggles with quarantine losesThe first Grand Slam of the year is under a special sign, mainly because of the various quarantine conditions for the players. Many were allowed to train on the court every day, but 72 of them had to stay in strict hotel quarantine for two weeks. For example Belinda Bencic or Henri Laaksonen.
“That will of course be an important factor in terms of the chances,” clarifies Mats Wilander (56) in an interview with “Nemzeti Sport”. “Physical preparation in a hotel room is not ideal, to say the least.”

As far as the Australian Open is concerned, Wilander has a big favorite on the list. “I would be surprised if Novak Djokovic didn’t win,” said Wilander about the 33-year-old. It’ll be very, very difficult to beat him.

But Wilander also believes that the Serbian world number 1 has to hurry if he wants to break Federer and Rafael Nadal’s Grand Slam record of 20 titles. «Novak has the chance to get the 20 titles this year.
