Did you know that you can now legally install modern diode lamps with higher brightness and white brightness in your older car with halogen bulbs? You just have to meet a few conditions.
If you want to experience guaranteed problems at the MOT or with the police, “turn off” old car with non-homologated high brightness bulbs. For example, in neighboring Germany, the policemen are happy to get angry at you, and the order to remove them on the spot means the least.
Therefore, it makes sense to buy only homologated products. And now you can even legally install high-brightness diode replacements on an older car as a replacement for classic halogens! We tried it on the editorial Dacia Duster and it really works.
Diodes are trendy
In addition to the approved ones, bulbs with a much higher luminosity than the official products have also been sold on the Czech market for many years. That is why they are not legally allowed on the road, and the manufacturers put the information in small letters on the covers that they are only intended for off-road use. According to some estimates, in neighboring Poland, for example, hundreds of thousands of cars drive with such non-homologated lighting, because it is not dealt with as much there. It is even standard in Russia. Unfortunately, we do not know the estimates for the Czech Republic, but it is worth taking a walk in front of the village disco on the weekend and getting a picture for yourself…
But even the most powerful light bulbs are no longer enough. Halogens are a thing of the past and diodes are becoming the norm for new cars – in addition to the Fabia, the new Dacias already have LED headlights as standard. And of course, owners of old cars demand the same.
The LED headlights shine with white light, and the car looks more modern with them. However, it was not possible to replace them legally for a long time, the first approved replacement of light bulbs for so-called LED retrofits was launched last year in the Czech market by Osram. Since this spring, it has had competition in the form of Philips products, and we were interested in what such an approval process entails for the Czech market.
