The New Year’s Eve fireworks are over. But fireworks are still being set off diligently in the canton of Zurich. “Last night, January 4th!!, it was still booming here,” is what it says, for example, in the Facebook group Zurich Wine Country FORUM. And Zurich residents also expressed their displeasure on Reddit: “I can understand that fireworks are used on New Year’s Eve. But today is January 4th and someone in Bülach still has a few petards left and used them yesterday and tonight.[…] Is this allowed?”
Over 50 reports of firecrackers in Zurich
Apparently there are some fireworks left over. Although setting off noisy firecrackers is practically not permitted anywhere, fireworks keep the police on their toes. The Zurich police force has already received over 50 reports of fireworks in the new year, as they confirmed when asked by ZüriToday. That’s an average of more than 10 reports per day. There were nine reports from the city of Zurich, eight from Winterthur and 35 in the rest of the canton on Friday morning.
The legal situation is clear. The burning of fireworks is regulated in the respective police regulations. New Year’s Eve is defined as an exception there. On the remaining days, loud bangs are banned almost everywhere. Anyone who feels bothered by fireworks outside the permitted times can contact the local police department.
Administrative fines or reprimands
When appropriate reports are made, police patrols go out and try to locate those who are causing the noise. There can definitely be consequences if you get caught shooting firecrackers. The Zurich city police usually impose a fine of 120 francs, says spokesman Pascal Siegenthaler. “If we find someone on site, they can expect to be reported,” says Carmen Surber, media spokeswoman for the Zurich Cantonal Police.
