Legal battle over termination of association contract with Averroès Muslim high school in France

The establishment’s lawyers deplore a method deemed detestable targeting the high school “the most controlled in France” according to them. The courts will also be seized.

“The method that was desired here is completely detestable.” The day after the announcement by the Northern prefecture to end the contract linking the Averroès Muslim high school to the State, the establishment’s lawyers counter-attacked this Monday, December 11.

They announce that they have been instructed to “introduce all necessary appeals, including urgently, in order to have the prefect’s decision suspended and then annulled.” The Defender of Rights was also contacted, from December 6, “concerning the unfair administrative treatment to which” the Lille establishment is subject.

“The target of multiple comments and rumors”

The decision to terminate the contract, which puts an end to subsidies for the main Muslim high school in France from the start of the 2024 school year, was taken on Thursday, December 7 in the evening, and a letter sent to the high school the next day, the prefecture indicated. AFP, without wanting to detail the content of the letter.

High school officials said they have not yet received it. “The undersigned lawyers deplore the disclosure by the press of the termination of the association contract which binds the Averroès high school to the State even though this termination letter, on the date of this press release, has not reached them,” write these latter.

“The Averroès high school is today the target of multiple comments and rumors, unfortunately relayed by the public authorities, totally defamatory and misleading which aim to obscure the reality of a republican, Muslim high school of excellence, and moreover the most controlled of France”, estimate the school’s lawyers.

They also denounce “the absolutely partisan attitude demonstrated by the prefect during the meeting of the consultation commission for private education which was held on November 27”.

This Monday, the president (LR) of the Hauts-de-France region, Xavier Bertrand, welcomed the prefecture’s decision, saying that it sent “a clear signal” against any “compromise with republican values”.
