Legal and Unconventional: 14-Year-Olds Driving Electric ‘Moped-Cars’ in Latvia

A 14-year-old can drive more than 200 kilometers without stopping with an electric car, and it turns out that this is not only possible, but even legal in Latvia. Paul Timrots tests the electric “moped-car” “Ligier Myli”, which weighs 450 kilograms, can drive at a speed of up to 45 km/h and even has air conditioning.

It has a 5.6 kW or 7.6 horsepower electric motor. In order to legally participate in shared traffic with such a moped, you only need a moped license, so you can ride it on the street from the age of 14. In order to obtain such a moped license, you do not need to go to a driving school, you can learn by yourself and with the help of your parents, after which you must pass the CSDD theoretical and driving exam.

Timrots “squeezed” the maximum 45 km/h with this car and admitted that it felt like he had forgotten to shift from second gear to third. Also, you have to drive on the side of the road so that others can overtake you, because you can also drive this car on the highway in Latvia. Timrots believes that it would be unwise to drive it from Jūrmala to Ågenskalni on the highway, but if the young man lives in Pinki, such a “moped-car” would be just in time for the small streets to Mārupe or Ågenskalni.
