Legal and Monetary Assistance Available for Homeowners and Renters After Disaster

NEW YORK — With the dramatic outlook facing thousands of homeowners and renters throughout the Hudson Valley,
it is good that you know that there is legal and monetary assistance.

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offers mortgage payment assistance if you are behind due to job loss.

People who are having trouble paying their mortgage after a disaster damaged their home or need help avoiding foreclosure can call HUD’s toll-free hotline at 1-800-569-4287 or visit a HUD-approved housing counseling agency. These agencies can also help with rental housing counseling, homeless counseling services, in-home rehabilitation counseling, and more.

In addition, there are legal services for insurance claims and other disaster-related matters. There is also advice to document damage to your property and claim assistance from “FEMA”.

Disaster Legal Services

Disaster Legal Services (DLS) provides free legal help to low-income disaster survivors (including homeowners and renters). If you are unable to obtain adequate legal services for your disaster-related needs, DLS can help.

FEMA provides this service through an agreement with the Young Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association (ABA). DLS can only provide advice and assistance in cases that will not generate a fee. For cases that may incur a fee, the ABA may refer you to a local lawyer referral service.

DLS can help with:

Insurance claims for medical bills, property loss, and loss of life. New wills, powers of attorney and other legal documents lost during the disaster Home repair contracts and contractors Problems with landlords Proof of home ownership FEMA appeals

The lawyers of DLS They are not FEMA employees. The services they provide are confidential and do not share information with FEMA.

And if you are undocumented, the Office for New Americans can advise you on the help available.

To connect with assistance, undocumented New Yorkers who have been affected by a disaster should call the Office for New Americans (ONA) hotline at (800) 566-7636 between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. p.m., Monday through Friday. The support hotline is available in more than 200 languages.

Governor Hochul previously announced the launch of the new online resource center for New Yorkers affected by Hurricane Ida, available at ny.gov/Ida. The center provides information on available assistance programs and where to find services such as shelter and access to food. The information on the site will be updated as more resources become available to New Yorkers.
