The Special Legacy Project paid a posthumous tribute to the remembered athlete Fernando Acevedo, multiple Peruvian athletics champion, who represented us in the Mexico 1968 and Munich 1972 Olympic Games, and was considered one of the best in the world, winning the medal of bronze at the Pan American Games in Cali in 1971, in the 400 meter dash.
The head of the Legal Advisory Unit of Legado, Óscar Malca, participated in the ceremony, held at the Atlético Stadium of the National Sports Village (VIDENA); Legado’s sports advisor, Giorgio Mautino; the former athlete, Alfredo Deza; the president of the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD), Guido Flores Marchan; among other authorities.
“I saw him compete on television, on a black and white screen, when I was a teenager. People of my generation looked to Fernando Acevedo as an example of improvement and effort. He was ahead of his time. It is incredible that his marks have not been beaten by any athlete in the country.”, stated Óscar Malca, representing the executive director of Legado, Carlos Zegarra.
Family, friends and sports personalities were also at the last farewell to Fernando Acevedo, who will be remembered for the mark of 45 seconds and 30 hundredths, which he reached at the Pan American Games in Cali in 1971, which allowed him to place himself among the ten best of the world. Likewise, the records that he set more than 50 years ago, currently no one has been able to beat in the 400 meter dash and 4 × 400 meter relay events.
“His arrival at Alianza Lima opened many doors, his experience as an athlete mixed it with his physical preparation. The team warm-up was totally different, people arrived early to watch the team warm-up in the stadium. It seemed like they were training ballet artists, because Fernando brought out that flexibility. “He finished with coach Javier Castillo, they made a good duo, leaving a good legacy in the club,” added Alex Berrocal, former coordinator of Alianza Lima.
Acevedo, born in Chincha, was also a physical trainer for large institutions such as Alianza Lima, Universidad de Lima and the Professional Association of Soccer Referees. He, in turn, was one of the great torchbearers at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, in honor of his impeccable career.
It is worth noting that, among other important records of Fernando Acevedo, the one achieved in the 100 meters stands out, which he maintained from 1977 to 2014. Adding to the mark in the 200 meters, which remained in force from 1971 to 2016.
