There is great concern at Union Berlin about Berkin Arslanogullari after his leg amputation – but now there is at least a small glimmer of hope. After the Bundesliga club called on its fans to donate for its goalkeeping talent, who is suffering from bone cancer, more than 120,000 euros were collected in the first few hours.

According to the club, the 19-year-old Arslanogullari received “the shocking diagnosis of bone cancer” a few months ago. “Despite all efforts and intensive chemotherapy, the cancer has not yet been defeated – as a life-saving measure, Berkin had to have a leg amputated a few days ago,” the statement continued.
The fundraising campaign launched by the Köpenick residents is intended to reduce the costs of treatment, rehabilitation and adaptation to the new living conditions for Arslanogullari’s family, Union said. A barrier-free apartment is particularly urgent, and the production of a prosthetic leg is also still pending.

Union talent already trained with the professionals
Arslanogullari played five times for the capital club’s U19 team last season. The club therefore wrote: “Even as a young boy, Berkin dreamed of one day playing in front of the Union fans at the Alte Försterei. With tireless effort, he went through Union’s youth teams and was allowed to train with the professionals for the first time last season.”

A highlight of his career so far was that Arslanogullari “was allowed to play in a friendly match for the professional team – a moment that he will remember forever.”
