When Frans Timmermans addresses the first joint GroenLinks-PvdA conference on October 14, the atmosphere is enthusiastic and optimistic. The polls are going well and even after the outbreak of the war in Gaza, they have managed to act unanimously. But, says political reporter News hour Nynke de Zoeten in this podcast, in some of the supporters emotions about the war are running high and there is also dissatisfaction about the line that is being set. This is especially the case among GroenLinks members.

You also see this dissatisfaction in some of the supporters of left-wing parties abroad. In England, Labor is doing well in the polls, but the war threatens to divide the party and puts pressure on its leadership. There is also a lot of discussion within President Biden’s Democratic Party in the US.

Historian and Middle East expert Peter Malcontent outlines how left-right thinking about Israel emerged and why cultural and ideological shifts are taking place on the left flank that are causing a certain struggle.
